Surgical Aspect of Hair Transplant
Donor area
It is the area from where the hairs are taken. The most common site for donor area is occipital area Donor Dominance. It is the hair follicle itself that determines longevity, not where the hair follicle is located or relocated to on the scalp.
There are two ways of harvesting the graft from the donor site
- 1. Follicular unit strip method
- 2. Follicular unit extraction
Follicular unit strip method
A strip of skin along with the hair follicles is taken from the occipital area. The donor site is then closed. There is no donor site visible scar. It is placed in the hair area and no scar is visible. The follicles are then separated under magnification into follicular unit.
Follicular unit extraction
The follicular unit are directly taken out from the donor area by punch.and then implanted into the recepient area.the holes are then left as such to heal.
Other sites for Graft
Thighs, Chest area And Beard area

Dissection of the strip
The strip is then dissected under magnification
Into microfollicles in group of one, two and three’s by a team
of trained technicians and doctors
Recipient area
The area is first marked preoperatively and then the area is prepared for grafts by making spaces. Once adequate holes/slits have been made then the follicular units are then transplanted. The spaces are made in such a way that hairs direction is that of the normal.
8 month post op
Post op Care
The following things to remember
The scalp should be kept moist either by application of ointment or patient should put water two hourly.
On fifth post op day the hair is washed by the surgeon himself or by patient as instructed
If strip method is used then stitches to be removed on seventh day
The patient is advised not to do strenuous physical activity for three weeks
Patient is advised to continue medical treatment
